Gail Tully is a midwife from the USA and the “mother” of the “Spinning Babies” project. If you are a healthcare professional or anyone else working with pregnant women and you don’t know the site yet, it is a MUST that you check it out. You will find a HUGE amount of useful information, articles, etc., that will help you in your work.
Various training sessions are also organized, as we all know that theory is easier to apply and understand with some practical tests, exercises, and training.
What exactly are “Spinning Babies” workshops?
At the workshops, you learn techniques to determine the fetal position and, based on that, how to act correctly or advise the woman so that the baby finds the right position for birth, with an emphasis on the pelvis.
Topics covered:
– Exploring the role of “soft tissues” in pregnancy, during labor, and in fetal positioning (muscles, ligaments, connective tissue)
– Common effects of posterior position on pregnancy and birth
– Fetal position and labor progress according to 3 principles: balance, gravity, movement
– Solving stalled labor with the “three levels of the pelvis”; pelvic mobility and soft tissue release
– Practical activities for comfort during pregnancy, spontaneous birth, and avoiding C-sections
There is also the possibility to include how to help the baby turn head-down in cases of breech presentation.

This workshop is for all personnel in active contact with pregnant women.
We invite doctors, midwives, nurses, doulas, childbirth educators and bodyworkers actively working with pregnant women. Content is not highly technical, but does require the basic knowledge of stages of labor, fetal positions and having attended a few births. For example, a brand new doula will find it rather overwhelming.
• Explore the effects and prevention of occiput posterior presentation
• Add comfort and prepare for labor during pregnancy – with a live model
• Reduce or prevent long labors during labor with the three levels of the pelvis
• Explain why patience may not always be the best natural birth solution;
• Identify when and why a cesarean is necessary for malposition
• Use the Mexican rebozo (scarf) to release a tight broad ligament;
• Get out of your chair and try spinning techniques for
o latent phase
o active phase
o 2nd stage
• Identify fetal position without hands-on palpation (touch) and within the doula scope of practice with Belly Mapping.
